Volunteer Needs

Volunteering at NorfolkBotanical Garden is not only gardening!  Volunteers work in every department, inside and outdoors.  Yes, there is lots of mulching and weeding to done year-round, but volunteers also do paperwork, work in maintenance, and even do virtual volunteering from home!  Volunteer opportunities below are listed by type, with special events first and ongoing volunteer needs second. If you have questions, or need more information, please call Debra Burrell at (757) 441-5830 extension 327, or e-mail volunteer@nbgs.org . We look forward to working with you!

Everything you do makes a difference.

WOW!  YOU WANT TO WORK WITH KIDS?

SPRING BREAK CAMP

Monday – Friday, March 23-28

9 a.m. – 1 p.m. or 1 – 4 p.m.

Working with KidsCalling all camp counselors!  If you enjoy working with children, need to get a lot of hours in a short period or time, or don’t want to hang out bored at home, this is a great volunteer opportunity.

Minimum age is 14 years old, so this is a very fun junior volunteer opportunity.  Background check (at the Garden’s expense) and current TB test (co-pay will be reimbursed) are required.

FAMILY OVERNIGHT

Saturday - Sunday, April 5-6

Any number of hours 3 - 10 p.m. Saturday or 6 - 11 a.m. Sunday

April is the month for Creative Creatures. Spiders, bugs, everyone’s favorite critters will be featured in this fun overnight.

Volunteers (who are old enough – 18 or with a family member 18 or older) don’t have to sleep outside, but can if they want to. You help serve food, assist with the fun activities, and make s’mores! If you love being awakened by early birds (or early planes), you can help in the morning with breakfast or breakdown. It’s a good way to get a lot of hours in one short weekend.

WOW DOCENT

ANY DAY OF THE WEEK

Especially SATURDAYS OR SUNDAYS

9 a.m. - 1 p.m.,

or 12:30 - 4:30 p.m.

Volunteers are an important part of WOW.  They greet visitors, help stamp passports, show how cooperation means more water shooting in the air, and man discovery carts to enhance the visitors’ experience.  This is a great opportunity for families to volunteer together (youngest family member must be at least 10 years old).   Junior volunteers (14 – 17) are welcome, too.
