Make Your Garden Glow

Melissa Butler, Curator of Herbaceous Plants

Water lilyWhen the sun goes down and the day’s chores are done, the time finally arrives to sit back and enjoy the landscape you’ve worked so hard to maintain. The garden transforms from a place of vivacity and color to a hideaway of subtle lights, shadows, scents, and textures. The senses are shifted away from the visual to those of taste, smell, sound, and touch. Our mood is altered to one of peace, leisure, and even sultry romance.

Gardens that are enjoyed at night require special planning to shine to their best advantage in the flattering light of the moon. Effective plant choice is essential. Choose plants that are renowned for luscious perfumes enhanced by hot summer nights. Confederate Jasmine, Hyacinth, and Glory Bower exude fragrances so sweet they intoxicate the senses. Plants with white, cool blue flowers or silvery foliage glow in the moonlight. Gardenia, Blue Salvia, and Dusty Miller appear ethereal when touched by the moon. Finally, plants with soft texture enhance the sense of gentleness in the evening garden. Muhly grass, Artemisia, and Maiden Ferns have whispery soft foliage that tousle in the evening breeze like a chiffon gown.

Other sensory elements develop the nocturnal garden experience further. The sound of a splashing water fountain is soothing and attracts twittering songbirds. Trees with papery leaves, like Summersweet Clethra, will rustle in the wind. A weatherproof sound system can bring soft music to any secluded nook in the garden. The merriment of children chasing fireflies is one of the sweetest sounds of summer. Friends, family, and a delicious glass of wine are all that’s needed to perfect a relaxing and elegant evening in your moonlight garden.
