LOOK OUT BLACKBEARD! A NEW CREW OF PIRATES IS TAKING OVER

Norfolk Botanical Garden provides two pirate weeks this summer to keep up with demand.

Norfolk, VA (March 9, 2007) –The children of Hampton Roads have spoken; when they grow up, many of them want to be pirates. The international craze sparked by popular pirate movies has not missed this region, which itself has a fascinating pirate history. Pirate programs that Norfolk Botanical Garden has had in the past have been so popular, that this year the staff added a second pirate week program to their NatureKids summer camp lineup, just to give more local children the opportunity to participate.

“Pirate week has always been our most popular week of camp” says Jennifer Buskirk, Scout/Summer Camp Coordinator at the Garden. “The children really like donning their pirate costumes and using their treasure maps to find hidden treasure.”

While children have enjoyed the pirate program in the past, this year promises to be even more exciting because it, as well as all of the Garden’s other summer camp programs, is going to be held at the Garden’s new World of Wonders (WOW) children’s garden, which opened last Labor Day.

Registration for pirate week and the other programs has already began, but for parents who want to know more, the Garden is hosting a Summer Camp Open House on Saturday March 24 from 12 pm to 3 pm at the WOW garden. Families are invited to meet with Camp Staff and preview activities that fill each week of camp in the new location.

For more information or to register for the Open House, parents can call 441-5838
