FIRST OF THREE EAGLETS HATCH AT NORFOLK BOTANICAL GARDEN,

WEB CAM GIVES RARE LOOK

Norfolk, VA (March 10, 2007) –The tiny, fuzzy form of an eaglet could be seen for the first time today on the live video streaming from a camera positioned on an eagle nest in the treetops 85 feet above Norfolk Botanical Garden. The eaglet hatched from one of three eggs laid by an eagle pair that has nested in the garden for the past four years. The other eggs are expected to hatch within days and because of the live footage, which can be accessed at www.norfolkbotanicalgarden.org, the world can watch it happen.

In November 2006 the eagle pair returned to Norfolk, and to their 800-pound nest originally built in 2003, to begin preparations for the eggs which were laid on January 31, February 3, and

February 7.

The second eaglet is expected to hatch sometime between March 9 and 11 and the third between March 13 and 15.

“We are very exited to be able to again work with the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and WVEC to provide this unique wildlife experience,” said Don Buma, executive director for Norfolk Botanical Garden. “It is such a great experience to watch the eggs hatch and see the little fuzz balls grow up.”

For more information about eagles or the live video feed a press release on the eagle camera is available at http://www.norfolkbotanicalgarden.org/mediaroom/Eaglecam2007.shtml

In addition to the live video, the Garden provides a daily eagle talk, which gives guests an opportunity to see the nest in person, learn more about eagles and about   this very productive nest. It is at 1:30 every day and is free with Garden admission.

The Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) has also launched an eagle blog with expert information provided by VDGIF Watchable Wildlife Biologist Stephen Living which can be reached from the garden website at http://www.norfolkbotanicalgarden.org/EagleCam.shtml.
