Black history is well-rooted in Norfolk Botanical Garden both in the attraction and the plants themselves.
The garden was started in 1938 during the Great Depression as part of Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration. More than 220 African Americans helped clear 30 acres of swampy land and helped create the beautiful, that you see today.
