Eagle Update – March 2005

They're back – and we're very egg-cited!

You loved them last year, and now the bald eagles and the high-flying fun have returned to the Garden!   The pair spent the early part of the winter adding to their nest at the top of a loblolly pine between Renaissance Court and the Matson Garden. The new additions to their home have made it a little harder to see into from NATO Tower , but you can still get a good view as the birds come and go from the nest.

In mid-February eggs were laid, so eagle-eyed observers may be able to spot babies in mid to late-March.  The proud parents will be busy getting food for the hungry youngsters, so it will be prime time to spot them flying back and forth from Lake Whitehurst to their nest.  By April, you should be able to see the eaglets as they move around in the nest and watch them as they grow.

If you come to see the birds and their babies, please keep in mind the Endangered Species Act – which is for federally listed endangered or threatened species -- makes it illegal to significantly disrupt normal behavior patterns.   Those include breeding, feeding or sheltering.  To avoid disturbing the eagles in their nest, portions of the Garden have been blocked off.   Please respect the barriers and help us help the young eaglets get off to a good start.
