Hurricane Isabel Devastates Norfolk Botanical Garden;
Enlisting aid of volunteers for clean-up

NORFOLK - One of Hampton Roads largest backyards, Norfolk Botanical Garden, is faced with devastating destruction from Hurricane Isabel. Volunteers are essential to our recovery effort.

The 155-acre Garden has sustained damages that double the effects experienced from Hurricane Bonnie just a few years ago.

Some of the major damages include: over 400 mature trees have been completely destroyed as well as hundreds of crushed shrubs, perennials and annuals. Structural damage to Renaissance Court (a favorite wedding site and site of the Azalea Queen Coronation), the Tropical Pavilion, the main Horticulture Building and Greenhouse. The list goes on.

Our core gardening and maintenance staff of just 15 people have been working tirelessly to restore the Garden to the natural beauty it is known and loved for. Although the Garden is officially open and running, the devastation has taken a huge toll on our landscape and will continue to effect the Garden for many months to come.

******** Call for Volunteers*******

The Garden is enlisting the assistance of volunteers to help with this daunting task of cleaning and repairing damage to our landscape.
