Nesting Bald Eagles Make A Home

  at Norfolk Botanical Garden

NORFOLK – What was once simply a beautiful loblolly pine at Norfolk Botanical Garden is now home to a pair of nesting Bald eagles. The eagles, a male and female pair, relocated to the Garden from Norfolk International Airport in early December 2003.

Since their arrival, the eagles have been diligently working to create their large nest in a loblolly pine in preparation for laying eggs in the early spring.

For the duration of the nesting period – at least until July – and beyond visitors to the Garden will have the unique opportunity to witness Bald eagles, a threatened species and the symbol of our nation, in a completely natural habitat.

The nest, located in the area between Renaissance Court and the Matson Garden, is visible from the ground but visitors can get an even better “bird's eye view” from NATO Tower.

“We are thrilled the eagles chose the Garden as their home,” said Donald Buma, Executive Director of Norfolk Botanical Garden. “Bird lover or not, these eagles are an amazing sight everyone should experience.”

In response to these exciting new feathered residents, the Garden will be incorporating special walking tours, educational programs and lectures into our schedule.   Upon arrival visitors can go to the Visitors Services Desk in Baker Hall to receive simple directions to the eagles home as well as facts and information about this much revered and admired national symbol.
