Position: Horticulture Enrichment & Learn Program Manager

 

This is a full-time position that administers the Garden’s Horticulture Enrichment and Learning Program (HELP) for at-risk youth. The position is responsible for supervising the HELP Counselors, GED instructor and HELP interns.

The HELP manager works with all partner organizations to ensure the Virginia Juvenile Community Crime Control Act (VJCCCA) requirements are fulfilled and Standards for Nonresidential Services for the Department of Juvenile Justice are maintained. 


Responsibilities also include serving as a liaison between Norfolk Public Schools, the City of Norfolk’s Human Services Department (Office on Youth), the Norfolk Juvenile and Domestic Relations 4th District Court Service Units and the Norfolk Botanical Garden Society. Will be responsible for fiscal oversight for the program, which includes grant management for city funded grant, overseeing Norfolk Public School budget area, monthly tracking for each student and meeting with city auditors.

Education and Experience:  Requires Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, counseling, horticultural therapy or closely related field.  Must complete an extensive background check and possess a valid Virginia Driver’s License.  Prefer probation/parole, community corrections or correctional treatment experience.  Experience working with at-risk youth and knowledge of horticulture/gardening preferred. Supervisory experience is required; experience with grant compliance a plus.  Must have ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Evening and weekend work will be required.

Position: Groundskeeper  

Description: This is a full time position that performs all aspects of grounds maintenance and landscaping.

Essential Functions: Performs grounds maintenance tasks including mowing, trimming, blowing, edging, fertilizing, pesticide application, turf installation, water feature care, road cleaning, irrigation repair and installation, tree removal, litter and garbage pickup, landscaping, and other related tasks.  Has the ability to work outside for 8 hours in heat, cold or light rain and can continuously walk, stand, bend and/or stoop.   Has the ability to push, pull and/or lift 75 pounds above the shoulder during working hours.

Requirements: Must be 18 or older with valid Virginia driver’s license.  Applicant must obtain a Virginia Registered Technician Pesticide Applicators license within six months of hiring. A minimum of 3 years grounds maintenance experience preferred.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Performs all aspects of turf care
  • Pesticide application
  • Works with Seasonal Groundskeepers, interns, and volunteers.
  • Irrigation installation and repair.
  • Water feature care.
  • Roadway cleaning.
  • Landscape installation.
  • Operate small and large power equipment safely.
  • Cleans and uses equipment responsibly.

Position:   Horticulture Enrichment & Learning Program (HELP) Counselor

 

Description:  This is a full-time position that provides on-site counseling, job training in horticulture and supervision of at-risk youth through the Horticulture Enrichment and Learning Program (HELP).

Essential Functions:  Works as a member of a team to provide supervision and horticultural training to at-risk teen-agers.   Work with Horticultural Therapy Program Coordinator and Manager to coordinate Garden work projects with the Horticulture Department on a daily basis and work side-by-side with HELP students in completing Garden tasks.  Performs gardening tasks, indoor plant maintenance, and counsels youth as required.  Learns basic horticulture principles and practices; works outdoor under varied weather conditions.  Must have good counseling techniques and the ability to work in a public setting.

Education and Experience:  Bachelor’s degree in psychology, sociology, counseling, horticultural therapy or a closely related field.  Will be required to complete First Aid, CPR, and Handle With Care Training.  Must posses a valid Virginia Driver’s License and complete a background check.  Prefer hands-on horticulture experience.  Knowledge of counseling, social work principles and practices and strong case management skills are necessary.  Knowledge of the growth, development, needs and problems of juveniles.  Must have ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.  Some weekend and evening work required.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Be on site each day to work with HELP students on specific garden tasks.
  • Drive van to pick up and return youths to their homes/bus stop daily, and other driving as required for field trips, etc.
  • Participate in interview process while screening potential participants with HELP staff and Probation Officer.
  • Works with other HELP staff to determine van pick up schedule and route for each student accepted into program.
  • Serves as a role model in administration of curriculum.
  • Counsels participants individually and as a group.
  • Deals with disciplinary problems immediately.
  • Administers first aid as needed.
  • Works as part of a team with garden teacher, HELP counselor, Horticulture Therapy Program Coordinator and Manager, and Horticulture Department to develop weekly garden projects.
  • Attends all workshop sessions; assists with teaching educational sessions as needed.
  • Monitors and supervises students during workshops, garden work., lunch and GED instruction.
  • Works with Gardeners to help them understand the needs of special populations.
  • Promotes Norfolk Botanical Garden through service on local and regional committees.  Participates in appropriate professional organizations.  Serves as Garden speaker for horticultural therapy programs and/or other Garden programs.
  • Meets weekly with HELP team to evaluate student progress.
  • Responsible for case management and file upkeep of assigned youth, not to exceed 50% of group capacity.
  • Assists with monthly tracking of service hours per student in compliance with City, State and Federal requirements as needed (CSA, CPR, Title IV).
  • Ensures that there are adequate funds for field trips in a timely manner.  Efficiently tracks receipts and paperwork surrounding this particular funding source.
  • Attends monthly parent group meetings to be held during the evening hours.
  • Assists HELP staff with scheduling workshops and field trips with an emphasis on horticultural therapy.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as requested.

Position: Herbaceous Gardener

 

Position type: Fulltime employment, 40 hours per week.

 

Description:  Performs all aspects of display bed maintenance in the assigned area to set a standard of horticultural excellence.

Essential Functions: Maintains horticulture beds and collections through weeding, watering, pruning, deadheading, mulching, edging, raking, fertilization and pesticide application.  Has the ability to work outside for 8 hours in heat, cold or light rain and can continuously walk, stand, bend and/or stoop.   Has the ability to push, pull and/or lift a 50 pound bag of fertilizer during working hours.  Must have a valid VA driver’s license.  Must obtain a VA Registered Pesticide Applicator’s license within 6 months of hiring.

Education and Experience: Minimum of Associate’s Degree and 2 yrs hands on experience or Bachelor’s Degree, hands on experience a plus.

  

Specific Job Responsibilities

The Herbaceous Gardener is expected to:

  • Care and maintain all aspects of assigned gardens (excluding turf and irrigation) at the highest level of horticultural technique under the direction of the Curator of Herbaceous Plants.
  • Maintain display beds through weeding, watering, pruning, deadheading, mulching, edging raking and fertilization.
  • Perform the appropriate soil preparation and planting of annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees.
  • Care and maintain Green Roof plantings and structure under the direction of the Curator and Maintenance Dept.
  • Develop and expand an in depth knowledge of herbaceous plants under his/her care, make plant selection suggestions, and assist the Curator in locating desirable additions to the botanical collection.
  • Complete accurate and timely accession records for all plants associated with garden under his/her care and ensure that all plants are labeled appropriately.
  • Write at least one article for a garden publication each year and present at least one lecture, garden club talk, or walking lecture each year.
  • Works alongside other members of the Herbaceous Department and Horticulture Department in team projects.  The ability to work in a team environment is essential.
  • Operates small engine equipment safely. (golf cart, weed-eater, blower, edger, etc.)
  • Cleans, and uses hand tools and equipment responsibly.
  • Assists with special events and other duties as assigned.

Position:  Garden Teacher

Description: SeasonalTerm position.  School Term:  September-May;  Summer Term: June-August.  Number of hours vary throughout the year, with the Spring and Summer Terms averaging 20-35 hours per week. 

Essential Function: 

School Term:  Learn and guide school tours, scout programs, birthday parties, overnights, and special events. 

Summer Term:  Teach summer camp programming ranging in ages 4-13 years old.  The camps are half day and full day camps.    

Year Round: Present “Discovery Cart” programs to visitors and help to ensure overall safety and customer satisfaction in World of Wonders: A Children’s Adventure Garden.

Education and Experience: Some college experience preferred.  Excellent communication skills are a must as is enjoyment for being outdoors. Requires teaching experience at the elementary or pre-school level and background and/or experience in the field of horticulture, biology, gardening, natural science, or any other like subject.  Requires pre-screening drug test, state background check and valid driver’s license.  Also requires TB test completed within the last 12 months.

Specific Job Responsibilities:

  • Conducts school programs both on-site and for outreaches in area schools.
  • Leads a birthday parties, scout programs, and overnight programs.
  • Conducts classes for full day and half day summer camps.
  • Works in WOW to provide programming and ensure safety and customer satisfaction.
  • Helps Senior Garden Teachers keep inventory of education supply closet by informing them of needed items.
  • Works weekends and evenings when programs and special events are scheduled. 
  • Works with supervisors to give feedback regarding existing programs and input to help develop new ones.    
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as requested.
